Bangkok and around

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and a perfect destination for travellers and adventure loving peoples. Bangkok is known for its ornate shrines, vibrant street life and historical tourist attractions. Bangkok is a city with megamalls minutes from 200-year-old homes, with temples sharing space with neon-lit strips of sleaze, and where streets lined with food carts.

When visiting Bangkok you can’t leave without having seen a single temple. You will find (slightly) fewer tourists here than at Wat Phra Kaew, but Wat Pho is our personal favorite among Bangkok's biggest temples. Visiting Chinatown’s bazaars or head for the water will give you another impression of Bangkok. The great Chao Phraya River act as a water taxi highway and you can easily hop on and off. Another nice way to explore the city is by bike. We did a bike tour with Co van Kessel which we really enjoyed. It brings you to the lesser-known quarters of Bangkok. If you are in Bangkok in the weekend you should definitely visit Chatuchak Weekend Market. It is one of the largest markets in the world and you can easily spend here a whole day. You can buy anything from food to clothes. The area of Banglamphu is convened with leafy lanes, antique shop houses, buzzing wet markets and golden temples and one of the most popular areas with travelers.

Near Bangkok is also plenty to see. The easiest green getaway is Ko Kret. It is an artificial ‘island’ that is known for its rural atmosphere, its distinctive pottery and its busy weekend market. Visiting the Maeklong Train Market from Bangkok takes an entire day, but is well worth it. Passenger trains pass through this risky market 8 times a day for almost 30 years. It is only an hour drive away from Bangkok. You will get to see a great variety of goods, vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, fresh lives, dried seafood, sweets, curry, and flowers. Another nice getaway from Bangkok is Koh Samet, an island with sandy bays bathed by clear aquamarine water. It is only 2 hours drive from Bangkok and 30 minutes by boat. It is a popular weekend destination.
