In the northern part of the Philippines Luzon attracts travelers with some wonderful mountainous areas, volcanic landscapes and a beautiful coastline dotted with dazzling beaches. Luzon is the main island of the Philippines and contains most of its active volcanoes. Visit the stunning rice terraces around Banaue and Bontoc. Catch some great waves at La Union and Baler or go for fabulous hiking to Sagada, Baguio and Mount Pinatubo with its striking landscape of canyons and pinnacles. In Vigan you can relive the colonial era: opt to take a romantic horse-drawn carriage or walk through the city and peek inside the heritage homes.
The southern region of the Philippines' main island has a volcanic and mountainous landscape. The Hidden Valley near Alaminos, south of Manila, is set in the crater of an extinct volcano. In these tranquil wooded surroundings are five basins of natural spring water which are good for swimming. Another must see of the southern region is Bicol which is famous for its adventure sports, from surfing in Camarines Norte and volcano-climbing in Albay to whale shark-watching in Sorsogon.
