Traveling in Papua is challenging, as there is hardly any infrastructure. This place is only for the adventurous traveler who has time and patience. It is stepping back in time and surrender yourself to the unknown. West Papua is filled with jungle-covered mountains and contains one of the highest biodiversity of the world. It is still home to many tribal groups. The legendary Baliem Valley is the most popular and most accessible destination in Papua's interior and is bounded by high mountains on all sides. A unique product of Papua’s indigenous people is koteka clothes; a penis sheath made of a hollowed gourd. Also their traditional houses are unique as they are rounded with a coarse grass roof and wooden walls without windows. On the islands of Raja Ampat on the west side you can do some best diving in the world. It’s like swimming in a tropical aquarium.
Papua is the perfect place to explore wild jungle, meet indigenous people and see the best of the underwater world. Be aware that traveling here is not for super-tight budgets.
