Lombok has long be overshadowed by neighboring Bali. With its enchanting waterfalls, hiking trails through tobacco and rice fields, the large, looming volcano of Mount Rinjani combined with relatively few tourists makes Lombok the ultimate destination to relax and see its original state. Lombok's famed beaches certainly do not disappoint. It boasts some of the most enticing stretches of pure white sand. The more popular beach villages include Senggigi on the west coast, the up and coming surfer's paradise of Kuta in the south and the fabled Gili Islands. Undoubtedly, Lombok’s most notable feature is the dramatic Rinjani volcano. It takes a challenging three-day trek to reach the top at almost 4,000m. The biggest difference with Bali is that the natural landscape and the traditional way of life have remained unchanged for hundreds of years. Local families still run accommodations and shops while in Bali many are run by global corporations.
