Traditional Djembe Class

Learn to play the djembe, one of Gambia's most important instruments. The music class will be given by Balla or one of our other experienced djembe teachers.

Djembe is a West African goblet drum played by striking the surface with one or two hands. The drum can be made in a wide range of sizes and decorative designs, although the goblet shape is always the same: a vast chamber at the top and a narrower neck towards the bottom. A confident beat with the hand produces a big booming sound that echoes within the hollow hardwood encasement and out of the open base.

Traditionally, the drum is made from goat rawhide stretched over a shall carved from a single tree trunk. The drum is actually tuned according to the ropes' tightness, which holds the drum skin in place. The tighter the skin is pulled, the louder the drum sounds. Now a popular and widespread percussion instrument, the djembe likely came from the Mali Empire in the Thirteenth Century, which spread to modern-day Burkina Faso, Gambia, Guinea, Côte D'Ivoire, and Senegal.

Djembe players achieve three types of sound by positioning their hands differently across the drum's surface: bass, tone, and slap, which resonate at varying pitches. You will surprise yourself at how quickly you pick up the techniques and get playing alongside the locals.

About Me

We are an NGO that creates opportunities for children in The Gambia. We've set up a cultural and educational center where workshops are offered and creativity supported. We also run a farm where disabled people work, and we have created a couple of travel experiences to dive deeper into the Gambian culture.
