Description
Welcome to our community-run camp at the Kenya coast, where you will have the chance to meet the Giriama people and get a peek into our daily lives.
Our village is home to around 1000 people who live in huts built of mud and straw. The people here wake up around six o'clock to a beautiful misty warm sunrise. The elders will discuss the family businesses within the village, fishermen go to work, the women will work on the land, and the young ladies will plait each other's hair for hours.
When the sun starts getting hot, the men and a few women will meet at one of the village's central five coconut wine bars discussing the day's events. Some evenings they are drumming, singing, and dancing their hearts out. The only other noises apart from this are the crickets and frogs. You have the chance to be part of their lives for a few days and understand this unique culture. You have the opportunity to take a canoe trip through the mangrove forest, meet the village people and have dinner with them, take a swim in the warm waters of the creek, go on a traditional fishing trip, and much more.
We have built five traditional huts, all in their own style with a double bed, mosquito net, and a simple bathroom. The camp center is a platform bar /restaurant with scenic views, serving delicious spicy Giriama food.
We will invest the profits from the camp further into community projects within Mida Creek in sectors like health, schooling, and agriculture.
