Nairobi Art Tour With Benjamin & Co.

Description

Hi, my name is Benjamin, and I established a social enterprise in Kibera that aims to empower our local community through tourism.

Kibera is located in the heart of Nairobi and is East Africa's largest informal settlement, with a population of about 1.2 million people. As our community is so often stigmatized from the outside, we wanted to use our platform to showcase a different side to life in an informal settlement and share positive and empowering stories from the locals that make up our community. You'll leave this tour blown away by just how lively and inspiring our neighborhood is.

Our team decided to curate a unique Nairobi art tour that takes you right into the heart of Kibera, where some of the Kenya's most innovative artists reside. To start our art tour, we'll visit a local art gallery here where you'll have the chance to meet some of the up-and-coming artists of Kibera while enjoying their paintings, drawings, and creative graffiti work. You'll learn more about what life is like in East Africa's largest informal settlement through art.

After the art gallery, we'll visit a group of local artisans who are famous for designing bags and bowls. From here, we'll see an innovative social enterprise that design nice shoes that are made entirely from recycled waste material.

Our next stop will take us to a local women's empowerment group we partner with to sell their colorful variety of beadwork, which helps fund their daycare center. You'll have the chance to join in and even design some beadwork yourself, which we highly recommend. We will then visit another group of sustainable-minded artisans who recycle discarded animal bones to make bracelets, earrings, bottle openers, and much more!

If you want to try a snack during the tour, I'll make sure to share some of my favorite Kenyan delicacies with you, such as mandazis or chapattis.

I look forward to hosting you and sharing more about our community on this inspiring Nairobi art tour that you will never forget!

Reviews

We had such a great time with benjamin who took us on this art walk. We met local painters who explained about the art they were making, we went to a local jewelry workshop who are making jewelry from animal bones, had some chai and chapatti along the way and finished off with a guy who is making shoes with upcycled materials. A great way to experience Nairobi!

I had a wonderful time walking with Benja to visit some of the local artisan collectives working in Kibera. Not only did we have the opportunity to learn more about the innovative and sustainable art techniques these artists are putting into practice, but we also had the chance to hear the many stories behind their lives and art. We're grateful to Benja for showing us around and also giving us a chance to support these small community-based artisan collectives. Highly recommended experience for the curious art lover visiting Nairobi!

We had a truly excellent experience on the Nairobi Art Tour with Benja and Lucas. The hosts themselves were engaging, have lived their whole lives in Kibera, and have countless stories to tell - ask them questions and you'll learn a lot about Nairobi life! They took us around their community and really exposed the creative underbelly of Nairobi. The artists we met were inspiring and emanated hope and energy. I cannot recommend it enough!
