Let me share a bit of my history with this special place. Lake Chala has been in my heart since the first time my Grandfather took me to this wonderful place when I was a very young. The first time to reach this place before ascending down to the crater lake about 100 meters down, my grandfather told me to talk to the ancestors and repeat some Chagga tribe words to request them to be safe. From that day on, this lake is my friend and favorite place to visit. At that time we were fetching water for cooking, fishing and swimming, my grandfather was using the area to hunt for many years, but now it is set aside for adventure, walking up to Kenya, Kayaking and Camping.

Lake Chala is nestled on the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro bordering both Tanzania and Kenya. I will take you to this beautiful Savannah area that captures such a great place in my heart. I will share with you about the Chagga legends around this area while hiking down the crater lake. This place is also fantastic if you are interested in birth watching as it is the home for several bird species. The area is also a home for primates like Blue monkeys which resides at the ground lake forest, baboons, velvet monkeys. Also, you can taste its water, which ranges in color from deep blue to green depending on the time of year. We will then kayak on the lake up to Kenya.

Along the way, we will taste some delicious local dishes prepared by our local mama's.

About Me

My name is Linus. I'm the founder and Coordinator of Mkuu Cultural Tourism Enterprise. I grew up in Mkuu-Rombo village 61 km from Moshi and 25 km from Lake Chala Crater. I have experience in Tanzania cultural tourism since 2009 – have been working with different cultural tourism programs and guiding tourists since 2012. I know well what cultural tourists like and prefer. Drop me a line and let me take you to a magic place off-the-beaten Path!

I am establishing a quasi Museum (local Museum) in my village dedicated to collect and preserve our valuable cultural objects which are facing massive destruction and loss due to globalization and other factors, a lot of objects already collected.
Taking tourists to Mkuu-Rombo and Lake Chala off-the-beaten path and sharing our culture and our area helps in preserving it.
