Description
Welcome to my little soapstone workshop in Nairobi. During my 3-hour art class, you will learn about soapstone making and create one unique piece to take home. During my art class, you will also learn more about my culture and taste some traditional Kenyan food.
I will warmly welcome you into my home and after giving you a short introduction, I will tell you all about soapstone, where it comes from, and how I can transform it into sculptures and artwork. I will personally demonstrate how to paint, shine, and carve designs into a 6-inch soapstone bowl and then give you the chance to create your very own art piece.
After the art class, we will take a break to have a traditional Kenyan lunch where I will be happy to answer any questions and assist you if you need help on your own bowl. I want the experience to be interactive and not a lecture.
You will get your own 6-inch bowl that you can carve designs in, paint, and shine. And at the end of the soapstone workshop, you can take home your artwork as a memory of this day.

About Me
My name is James and as early as I can remember, soapstone has been a part of my life. I grew up around soapstone (seeing my family/community making their living off of soapstone: mining, carving, washing, painting, shining, designing, and selling), in the village of Tabaka (the only place in Africa soapstone is found, just over 6 hours Northwest of Nairobi), located within Kisii County. When I was a teenager, I too got into the soapstone business to help support my family and have since made a career out of it. I have been painting and designing soapstone for almost 15 years.
