Hike to Lake Kivu with Ernest

This Lake Kivu Hike will take you through the stunning Rwandan landscape as I introduce you to my friends in the community. We will start our walk 500 meters down via small paths up to Lake Kivu. The trail goes through various tiny villages and a beautiful rural Rwandan landscape. We will arrive at the lake after around two hours of hiking.

You can jump into the fresh, clear, and calm water and enjoy a swim as we prepare a delicious picnic for lunch on the spot and enjoy the stunning views. When you are ready, we will start hiking back. This hike is very remote, which will give you a glimpse of the Rwandan countryside.

Besides this, you also have the opportunity to learn Rwandese cooking, help at Mama Dunia’s Bakery, or visit our nursery school. These activities are free of charge.

You will sleep in our community-run small guesthouse overlooking Lake Kivu. Our rooms are equipped with a bed, mosquito net, and a small bathroom with hot water.

It was amazing! The booking would have been for an overnight stay, unfortunately, I had to leave on the same day because of an appointment in Kigali, which I forgot about. But Ernest is a really cool guy, has huge knowledge and his engagement for the community is amazing. His life is really impressive! Can definitely recommend joining him!

The hike was very exciting and it was such a special experience. It gives you the chance to see the different villages and meet local people on the way to the lake. The landscapes are spectacular and very beautiful. The guide Ernest is very nice and it was interesting to hear about the community and their projects from him. I would recommend this activity to everyone!

About Me

We are a local non-profit organization that seeks to integrate vulnerable groups in the Rutsiro district of Rwanda through community development.

Our focus areas of work are capacity building, providing access to education for underprivileged children, and medical assistance and support for children and adults with chronic diseases and disabilities. We have conducted many successful projects so far. For example, a pullover weaving initiative, setting up a community library, running a nursery school for young children, building a bakery run by our women's cooperative, and our tourist guest house.

By visiting us and experiencing the local life you contribute to the sustainability of our organization, which is owned and run by local people.
