Experience Kibera Slum from the Inside

Hi, we are Christine, Diddy and Nick. If you are looking for an authentic and local experience, we invite you to us to the place where we grew up, Kibera. You will get a glimpse into what life is really like in Africa’s largest Informal settlement (slum)!

On the outskirts of Nairobi you will find Kibera, one of Africa’s most ‘developed’ cities. Yes, there is a lot of poverty, but there is also a sense of freedom. It is a place where social and artistic enterprises evolve outside the confines of more formal settlement.

We will meet at the Java House at Prestige mall from where we will start our walk. We will visit various places in Kibera while explaining you how we live and how life is organized. We will meet the artists of an art gallery, which is a hub of creative talent where eight selftaught artists use this studio to create visions of their world. Gomba, one of the artists, recycles the debris that litters the alleys, giving them a new life in his work.

Another stop is at the Victorious Youth Group. A group of twenty young people who come together every day to make beautiful jewelry, chop sticks, bottle openers and other items all made from animal bones. We will also visit one of our houses so that you can see how we live.

Continuing our journey we pass The Pentagon. This is the official home of entertainment in Kibera. It regularly has live bands playing into the night or is a nice spot for an afternoon beer. If you wish you can taste a beer at an authentic changaa bar.

Feel free to ask any questions during the walk. We recommend to be careful with making pictures of people. Always ask one of us first.

With bad weather or just after rain the terrain it can be difficult to navigate. It is suggested to wear strong shoes and if it has rained they should also be watertight!

Starting time: the starting time we can discuss with you, but best is somewhere between 9 am and 3pm

Meeting point: Java house, Prestige Mall, Ngong Road, Nairobi

Every time I have guests I convince them to do a Kibera tour. This week I joined a friend and we were shown around in Kibera by Christine and Nick. Two local guides who are also the very pleasant company. My friend was very impressed and it was a highlight of his stay in Nairobi. He was mostly touched by the positive vibe you feel when you walk around and the friendly people who make you feel welcome. Thank you, Christine and Nick

We had a brilliant and insightful morning exploring Kibera with Christine and Nicholas. It's such a great way to see such a major part of Nairobi and experience a buzzing and warm culture. We would highly recommend it! Thank you!

Lotti Gregory

We really enjoyed the tour and Christine was so kind and helpful. We felt very safe and comfortable!

We walked with Christine and Nick for 3 hours and saw many different faces of Kibera thanks to both of our guides’ personal insights. We visited several private homes, workshops and community projects. It was all very rewarding to experience and the entrepreneurial spirit of this place is amazing. Thanks to our guides and I Like Local!

For ourselves and our 3 daughters, 10,12 and 14 it was a lifetime experience. The tour was with humor with Lemmy the guide and with respect to the people in the slums. We felt so safe! We recommend it to anyone, do it in your first day in Nairobi...

I really enjoyed the tour of Christina with her friend Nicholas - they showed me around in entire Kibera, showing the various important aspects of the Kibera community including Christina’s own family shed. It’s been a memorable experience seeing and exploring an area of people with limited opportunities but a great sense of community
