Cycling Trip Visiting Local Artisans in Yogyakarta

Description

Besides majestic temples, Yogyakarta is well known for its community of handmade artisan crafts. Together with my lovely wife, Fili, we run a bamboo homestay in Bantul and offer an authentic cycling experience visiting these local artisan workshops. Our homestay is located nearby the biggest craft village in Yogyakarta, and we'd show you the off-the-beaten-path spots!

While we pedal our bike through rice paddies and breathing the fresh air, we'll make a stop to visit various artisans' workshops who are still keeping the Javanese tradition alive through their devotion to the craft. From woodworking workshop, blankon artisan (traditional Javanese hat), pottery, mosaic, kreneng artisan (one of the dying craft in Yogyakarta with only a handful of elderly still doing the work), and the list goes on.

We choose to do this tour by bike as we think cycling is the best way to have the opportunity to interact with the local people.

Reviews

Me and my wife had a great few hours cycling through the countryside and meeting the local artisans. Josh and Dewi are also two wonderful people who can tell so much about the local culture. Must do!

Through Josh & Wira we got the opportunity to catch some special impressions of the local culture in Yogyakarta. Besides visiting local artisan workshops, we had a chance to plant rice at a local rice field. On our tour, we got to know very impressive, warm, and open people, and all these wonderful and special impressions will always be in our mindset. We can absolutely recommend this place!

About Me

I'm Josh, founder of a tour guide school, Rumah Guide Indonesia, and Rumah Inspirasi Jogja, a community project focusing on Environmental Education and Sustainable Tourism based in Jogja. Together with my wife Filiana Mila Dewi and our four kids, we have been practicing Minimum Waste Lifestyle on our way to Zero Waste Lifestyle. Instead of throwing our trash away for four years now, we manage everything and introduce our own "bottle project" to motivate the locals to be responsible for their trash. The results of our bottle project can be seen in our homestay as eco-bricks and other additional furniture.
