Are you the one who is always looking for an off-the-beaten path experience? On this experience this is what you’ll get!

We will start our experience by visiting our passionate banana farmers to learn about this magical plant that is so important to us. They will show you how it grows, how they harvest and how it is used. After saying goodbye to our banana farmers we will bring a visit to a coffee plantation where you will see the process from bean to cup. Of course you will have the chance to taste a delicious cup yourself!

The area is also home to some ancient Chagga caves. I will share the fascinating stories behind its existence.

On our way to the village we will meet a banana brewing family where you can see how the banana beer is made and taste it for yourself.

Then it is time for a delicious lunch prepared by our local mama. The food she serves is our traditional local cuisine, Machalaari (banana with beef), banana stew, and bean stew to name a few.

After we have finished our lunch we will visit our ritual site where the excavated mandibles of the dead are preserved. I will tell you more about why some people are still practicing such traditions these days.

Reviews

We had a great time inside the banana forest of mkuu, met the chagga tribe, danced with them, drank banana beer and they made us feel at home. The whole experience was like a fairytale.

I was recommended to these guys over dinner when I was in the Kilimanjaro area with a day of doing nothing much. They had a great little set-up and I happily spent all day there. I got a dala dala from Moshi and our guide, Linus, met me from the bus. In total there were four of us doing the tour that day and we all got along. We made our own coffee in the traditional way, grinding it and roasting it ourselves. We visited a hidden Chagga tribal cave that once was used as a hideout during tribal conflicts, I loved it when we turned off the torches and got to experience just how dark it was. After a traditional lunch on their shaded veranda, out of the heat of the midday sun, we harvested some bananas, literally pulling the tree down to harvest the crop.I'll definitely look them up next time I'm in the area.

It was an amazing experience. We met new people and chagga culture. We danced a lot and had fun, they poured us a beer and they accepted us to their house . Furthermore they showed us their traditions which are unique and great.

About Me

My name is Linus. I'm the founder and Coordinator of Mkuu Cultural Tourism Enterprise. I grew up in Mkuu-Rombo village 61 km from Moshi and 25 km from Lake Chala Crater. I have experience in Tanzania cultural tourism since 2009 – have been working with different cultural tourism programs and guiding tourists since 2012. I know well what cultural tourists like and prefer. Drop me a line and let me take you to a magic place off-the-beaten Path!

I am establishing a quasi Museum (local Museum) in my village dedicated to collect and preserve our valuable cultural objects which are facing massive destruction and loss due to globalization and other factors, a lot of objects already collected.
Taking tourists to Mkuu-Rombo and Lake Chala off-the-beaten path and sharing our culture and our area helps in preserving it.
