Description
Would you like to unleash your creative side and get busy with paint and textiles? Then this Tanji batik art workshop is the perfect place to start for any artist: from absolute beginner to advanced. Batik is a dyeing technique applied to whole cloth, which can often be used to make clothing that you will see many Gambians wearing but also for interior design as it is very characteristic of Tanji art.
The art workshop is run by a local artist experienced with the traditional Tanji batik technique. Geneba or one of the others will teach you all the ins and outs of batik painting at this workshop. To be able to batik, the textile needs to be treated with a specific wax first. And as soon as the wax has dried, the textile can be painted, which sometimes takes the form of dipping the whole cloth into a mixed dye bath. The parts that have wax do not absorb any paint. In this way, you can create beautiful patterns which are different each time due to the handmade process. At the end of the day, you will take home your own piece of Gambia artwork.
