2Day Trek to Experience Local Village Life in Darj

On the first day, you will be picked up in the morning from your hotel in Kalimpong, and then we will drive you to the first village, Kashyem. After a savory breakfast, we will explore the village's surroundings and then trek along a hillside path to the village of Baranumber. This is a stunningly beautiful Himalayan stroll on reasonably level terrain with views down into the Rangpo Valley. Baranumber stretches up the hill and contains some 98 households. The villagers are mostly field workers of the Quinine plantation, and the hillside is terraced with small plots growing many kinds of crops. You will sleep at a local family's house and learn about their culture and traditions. You can even learn to make traditional Nepali food. Eating and drinking will be sitting on the floor in the true Nepali style (unless you wish to sit at a table).

On day two, after having breakfast, we will take the high road to Sillary Village. We will pass the Sillery Forest to a viewpoint overlooking the confluence of the Teesta and Rangpo Rivers, where you'll have a stunning view of Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world. The morning ends with a stroll down to the village of Sillery, virtually hidden on the upper slopes. Here we will enjoy a typical Nepali lunch, relax and chat. In the afternoon, we will walk up to Damsang Fort, a ruined 17th Lepcha walled palace, after which you descend, have a cup of tea at a local handmade paper cooperative, and then return to your hotel in Kalimpong in the afternoon.

About Me

My name is Jiwan Rai, and am running an NGO that focuses on improving the education and livelihood of poor rural hill areas in Darjeeling, India, since 2002. To help poor rural schools to provide quality education, we support our 15 partner schools through education grants, school construction, teacher training, inter-school sports and quiz competition, agricultural activity, etc. Also, to create income streams for rural village communities, we operate community-based tourism in Kalimpong. The funds raised from the tour are used for village and school development activities. We highly welcome you to our villages to experience authentic Nepali village life and support the communities and schools!
