Description
During this bicycle tour, I will take you on a journey through Cambodia's countryside and the traditional family businesses in Battambang Province. You will see these family businesses and learn how to make rice paper, rice wine, the famous bamboo rice cakes of Battambang, dried bananas, and fish paste. Many families have been running these businesses for decades and learned the skills from aunts, uncles, and grandparents. You will also enjoy fresh fruits and coconut at a local family's house. The easy cycle ride of approximately 25km will take you via flat paved and dirt roads past rice fields, along the Sangker River, through villages and lively markets, glimpsing daily life along the way.
You will also get insight into how the rice grain is used to produce paper, cakes, and wine. We will educate you on the two rice growing seasons in Cambodia, about the different types of rice and their use. In many ways, the cycle of planting, growing, and harvesting rice dictates Cambodian life's rhythm. Many of the families we meet create their traditional products in the period between planting and harvesting their fields.
Along with viewing the production of and sampling traditional Cambodian products, you will also get to know more about the history of Battambang and the period of the Pol Pot regime.
This tour started in 2010 in collaboration with a social enterprise and local college students to provide vocational training to local college students while also educating tourists about everyday life in Cambodia.
