In the northwest of Cambodia you can see the influences of Thailand clearly, especially in the style of the houses. The region is first and foremost about remote temples, many of them pillars of the Angkorian Empire. Visit the rarely visited Banteay Chhmar, a ruined Angkorian temple which is still completely unrestored and overgrown by jungle. You can stay in a homestay of a Banteay Chhmar family for example. Other temples worth a visite are Prasat Preah Vihear and Sambor Prei Kuk.
Another place worth a visit is laidback Battambang, one of Cambodia’s largest towns with a lazy riverside ambience, colonial-era villas, shophouses and an Art Deco market. From here you can take a river cruise to Siem Reap.
At the Tonlé Sap Lake you can explore floating villages that take you back in time!
