The Activity

  • Join on this Sapa trekking and see the real Vietnam
  • Learn about the herbal medicine of the Red Dao people
  • Trek through beautiful rice terraces and exceptional landscapes
  • Soak your body in a herbal bath
  • Be warmly welcomed in a local family’s home

During this original Sapa trek I will give you a good impression of my people and their way of living. The Red Dao people are known for their expertise in herbal medicine, especially medicinal baths, and they use plants from the forest to treat many illnesses.

The first day we will visit different local villages of the H’mong and Red Dao communities. You can enjoy stunning views of rice terraces, and even pass the impressive ruins of a nunnery (or convent), often misconceived to be a monastery. The friendly local people will greet you on the way. The Red Dao use many plants to treat different diseases. They are experts in herbal medicine. You will be introduced to some Red Dao women who can tell you more about their many remedies. At the end of the day you will be welcomed into the home of a local Red Dao family, where dinner will be cooked on an open fire. You can soak your body in an herbal bath and sleep soundly enjoying the serenity of sleeping in the mountains.

After a good night's sleep, a new exciting day of this Sapa trekking tour is going to start. After breakfast you will start the trek to Trung Chai Village. It is located in an exceptional landscape! After having hiked a few hours you will be provided with a picnic lunch. Sit, relax and enjoy the beautiful environment. Upon arrival to Trung Chai there will be transportation back to Sapa Town. You will return home with a memorable Vietnam trekking experience.

Meet Shu Tan

Ask a question

Hello, my name is Shu Tan, I am a single mother from the Black H’mong tribe. With the help of four Australian volunteers, I was able to turn my dream of helping my people into a reality. Working together, we funded the first H’mong owned homestay in Sapa and established a socially conscious trekking service. Running on the social enterprise blueprint, we put the money earned back into the community through projects such as providing winter clothes to children and improvements to the village schools.

Later, I decided to tackle the problem of illiteracy among Sapa’s young tour guides and street vendors, many of whom never had the chance to go to school. With the help of a Norwegian anthropology student I organized informal English night classes for a small group of enthusiastic youth in a room provided by a local hotel. As these classes grew in popularity, so did the need for more facilities. In the summer of 2010, our first school opened.

Today, we run on the same social enterprise principles on which it was founded: working hard and giving back. We now have four inter-connected pieces: a school, a café, a hotel and a tour operation.

This was one of the highlights of my Vietnam trip. The trekking was stunning and well organized. Our guide was very sweet and we spoke a lot about our cultures. The herbal bath was amazing. Thanks a lot!

What a fantastic experience! It was a perfect chance to get in touch with local people, to learn how they live and how they work. I was part of their life for two days. Thanks to all family members who hosted me at their place. Will never forget them!

We loved this 2-day Sapa trekking with our guide Co. She was caring and was very patient. The views were simply amazing! She pointed were to take the best pictures. We stayed at her clean homestay were she had piglets, chickens, dogs and cats. Her crispy spring rolls were to die for! Her homestay was very clean and even had hot water for taking a shower. Definitely recommend this Sapa trekking!
