We will depart Mae Sariang town to visit Karen and Lawa hill tribe villages. You can enjoy the magnificent views as we drive up a windy mountain road 1,200 m above the sea level.

As soon as you arrive at the Lawa hill tribe village, you will meet your homestay family. Our local guide will take you for a walk around the village. You can observe and learn about Lawa hill tribe way of life and culture. Enjoy a traditional lunch in the village or at the local temple. Visit the mountain temple, where you can learn about Buddhism and meditation. Enjoy the tranquil location and mountain panorama from the temple rooftop.

A few kilometers further off road you may see women pounding rice, cutting firewood or weaving. Visit the village school where you can observe classes. Optional activity is to visit the village silversmith where you can learn to make a silver ring. If it is farming season, we can take you to join in the farming such as planting or harvesting rice. If you are lucky you may catch a village celebration such as a spirit festival or wedding.

Experience the warmth and hospitality of your host family, prepare a traditional evening meal together and enjoy cultural exchanges. Stay overnight at the hill tribe homestay.

Note the homestay conditions are basic. There is electricity but no running hot water. There is simple bedding with a thin mattress, blanket and mosquito net. Bathrooms are located underneath the stilt house.

We follow the natural rhythms of village life, so sights and activities change accordingly. A 2d/1n tour will give you a taste of hill tribe life, but for a deeper cultural experience we recommend extending this to 3d/2n.

Meet Pat

Member since: June 2014

Sawasdee khrap! (Hello!) My name is Pat. I am Shan (Tai yai), an ethnic minority from northern Thailand. It has been my lifelong mission to work towards a better quality of life for hill tribes and locals so that they enjoy the same social & economic rights as people in the lowlands while maintaining their unique cultural identity and values.

I have been a tour guide for over a decade and I saw how tourism, if conducted responsibly, could generate supplemental income and help local communities. So the idea of a homestay and hill tribe village tours led by local guides came about. Tourism also gives locals a chance to proudly showcase their wonderful culture and way of life and preserve age-old traditions and customs.

I believe that cultural exchange can be a memorable life-long learning experience for locals and travellers. And therefore, I invite you to join us and experience the cultural and natural beauty of my homeland. I am working with a group of local guides from the different communities. Either myself or one of them will guide you.
