DESCRIPTION

Near Galle is an authentic woodcarving village where the people work hard to get an income. This is my home where I grew up. By joining me you not only will have a great time, but you will support the families directly.

I will pick you up from your guesthouse in Galle or Unawatuna by tuktuk (other places are possible to at some extra costs). I will take you to my village and tell you about its history and the art of wood carving while having the possibility to chat with the villagers. A coconut will be served along the way.

Around lunch time there will be a delicious homemade Rice & Curry waiting for you at a lovely family’s home.

Then it is time to paint your own wooden elephant. Outside one of the family's houses you will get the time to create your own souvenir.

When all is finished, I will bring you back to your guesthouse.

Starting time: 10 am

Meeting point: your hotel

Price includes:

  • Traditional Berber lunch (couscous, tajine, bread...)

Meet Dinesh

Ask a question

Hi, I'm Dinesh and I am a tuktuk driver in the south of Sri Lanka. I recently started a tour close to Galle to support my local woodcarving village. I can share many stories of my village and how things were when I was a kid. You will meet various families, have dinner together and go home with your self-painted wooden elephant as a souvenir.

Location

Our local village and elephant painting experience with Dinesh was brilliant! From the initial communication to our drop off at the hotel Dinesh was open, informative and friendly. He picked us up in his tuk-tuk, drove us to the woodcarving village and walked us around several homes and workshops. It was a behind-the-scenes look into the lives and work of the woodcarvers and painters. We were able to purchase products along the way but felt no pressure at all to do so. All the people we met were very friendly and generous. We then returned to the main house for our elephant painting, which was really fun and had our 3 kids (aged 7 to 12) very engaged. We really enjoyed this experience. It felt local and authentic, and we each had something lovely to show for it at the end. A good-value, fun way to fill half a day in Galle.
