Cricket is very much an essential part of the local culture in Sri Lanka, and what better way to get to know me and my community than throwing a cricket ball around with us? I am a professionally trained cricket player and have participated in numerous tournaments with my local team.
I’ll share about my personal history with the sport and explain to you what the game of cricket means to the local culture here and nationally. I provide in-depth explanations about the history and practice of this sport in Sri Lanka, especially to those who are completely new to the sport. Additionally, I offer this experience as part of a practicing local team with a professional coach, who gives on-site training to the guest in beginner techniques (or more advanced skills depending on the experience of the guest).
Set on an active cricket ground, this inter-cultural experience is an opportunity to learn about the locals’ passion for the national sport and its star players over the course of its history. You will be coached by a talented team captain, will be introduced to beginner “balling” and “batting” techniques and will get to play an exciting game with local players.
The meeting point is the Panadura Main Bus Stop which can easily be reached from Colombo or Galle by public bus. Bus stop is in Panadura (45min south of Colombo). I escort all visitors from there to the cricket ground which is five minutes away.
Exclusively for I Like Local, I offer a complimentary souvenir in the form of a cricket ball. You will take home a memento as a talking point to share what you learned about how we play cricket in Sri Lanka with your friends and family. I hope you'll keep in touch with us too, and let me know how your batting technique improves with more practise back home!
