Let me show you what life is like in my home village, a hidden gem in Laos where you can live like a local and embrace authentic culture. While westernisation creeps in to tourist areas in Luang Prabang, travel just two hours away and discover my friendly authentic Laotian village lost between the Ou river, rice fields and twisting mountains. In my village, you will meet locals from two different ethnic groups, Khamu and Lao Loum. Most of my family is still living here.
I will meet you at your hotel in Luang Prabang, then we will take a small boat to get to the village. Most of the village people are fisherman or farmers and live in close connection with the natural environment. You will see chickens roaming freely around and children playing. If you are a more adventurous traveler looking for a unique encounter with Laotian culture off the beaten track, then this experience will definitely suit you. You will really become part of local life and help in their daily chores, so please be prepared to roll up your sleeves and get involved with your host family's everyday tasks. Stroll around the village, see the farmers at work, eat local homemade food, visit the local school, spend time reflecting at the temple and go fishing with the family.
You will sleep the local way, on a mat on the floor or on a thin mattress. Shower time will be daily at 5pm along the river with the other villagers but you can also use the indoor bathroom anytime. The family doesn’t speak English, but Kham can help you communicate with them. Your food can be arranged on request with Kham or you can also eat the local way. They don’t eat meat or fish daily but plenty of rice, plants, roots or vegetables.More information
