DESCRIPTION

Two hours from Luang Prabang is my wife's home village called Ban Mouang Suan. This authentic village is lost between the “Ou” river, the most beautiful of the whole country, infinite rice fields and mountains. It regroups 2 different ethnics, khamu and Lao Loum. Till today most of Kham's family is still living here. We will take a small boat to get to the village. Most of the village people are fisherman or farmers and live from the environment. You can see chicken roaming freely around and children playing. If you are looking for an off the beaten track, unique place then this experience will definitely suit you. You really can become part of local life and help in their daily chores. Stroll around in the village, see the farmers at work, eat local food made by Kham, visit the local school, temple and go fishing with the family.

You will sleep the local way, on a mat on the floor or on a thin mattress. Shower time will be daily at 5pm along the river with the other villagers but you can also use the indoor bathroom anytime. The family doesn’t speak English, but Kham can help you communicate with them. Your food can be arranged on request with Kham or you can also eat the local way. They don’t eat meat or fish daily but plenty of rice, plants, roots or vegetables.

I booked their trip to kham's village and I'm so glad I did. Kham collected me from my hotel and we travelled in her dad's van. It's quite a long way, but I was very comfy up front and even got to catch up with my reading when not looking at the stunning scenery! On arrival we took a little ferry over to the village- and the fun began! ...

One of the most memorable experiences we've ever had. My partner and I did 3days/2nights with Kham in her childhood village. We learnt a lot and would recommend it to anyone who wants an authentic experience. Seeing the locals crafting baskets and dresses was a highlight, along with interacting with the school children.

The best Laos memory I have was this trip to the village where Kam was born, located 2 hours from Luang Prabang. You will have to take a small boat to get to the village Ban Mouang Suan. In this village most of the people are farmers. This is definitely a place to visit as it is off the beaten track. No mass tourism, but becoming part of the local life. Walk around in the village, see the farmers at work, eat some local food made by Kam, visit the local school, temple and go fishing with the homestay family. This is not a place you can read about in the Lonely Planet or on Tripadvisor.
