The Activity

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Immerse in the hustle and bustle of the largest fresh produce market in Nairobi
  • Join me in my kitchen to make some delicious Kenyan food
  • Sit down and enjoy the fruits of our labour
  • Duration: 6,5 hours

DESCRIPTION

At 8.30 am we will start our food journey by visiting the fresh produce market in the Nairobi central business district. Here you'll get to understand and see where the food comes from. I will introduce you to my trusted vendors whom I have cultivated a long relationship with. At the same time you'll get to witness how locals get to bargain and eventually buy their everyday food. For the non-vegetarians, we'll start off the experience at the fresh meat market, still within the central business district before heading to the fresh produce market. This part will help you appreciate the great diversity of the Kenyan agricultural scene.

We'll then get into either public transportation or a taxi (depending on your preference) and head to my kitchen. There we will get down and prepare all our food and finally enjoy it. This second part will take an average of four hours. Throughout the entire experience I will take you through different history of the foods, talk about our cultures and at the end of it all we will part as friends (after having met as strangers).

Price includes:

  • All he cooking equipment
  • Bottled water once we get to my kitchen
  • Transportation from CBD to my kitchen. You will be responsible for your own transportation back, I will, however, ensure that you get to board the correct vehicle or taxi.
  • Three meals and a condiment

Location

We had a great time with Agnes. She took us to the local market for a taste of Nairobi, then back to her kitchen/apartment. The space is functional and gives you a feel of what the city is like. Agnes was a joy to spend the day with. She did a great job of hands-on cooking, Kenyan style. The food was great and I will try to replicate it at home for friends. I highly recommend Agnes!

I wish I could rate 6 stars. My wife and I were visiting Nairobi and we have have done many experiences like the one of Agnes’ in other cities...meet a local at a market, shop, cook and eat together. But this one was something different, because of her passion not just for her home city but also for the food. She clearly loves sharing this passion with others. We met her at a central market, purchased a whole fish and then walked to the bustling produce market, with her explaining city life and geography along the way. At the market, she took care to explain what we were buying. We took a car back to her kitchen and immensely enjoyed the next few hours of cooking, eating and back and forth sharing of perspectives from our countries. We learned a lot about ingredients and techniques of Kenyan cooking, but also about similarities and differences between life there and our home of New York. Lily and I will cherish the memories of our time and meal with Agnes, and could not give a more enthusiastic recommendation. Thank you, Agnes!

A definitely must do! From the moment we met it felt like family. Agnes and Monica warmly greeted us and took us on a tour of the fish/meat market followed by the most amazing walk through the city center. After a short Uber ride to her place of business, we began the process of preparing all the food. We exchanged stories and this is what made this a true experience. We didn’t feel like clients, but more like family that’s in town for the holidays. I would talk more about the deliciousness of each item we prepared, but it was so good and plentiful I just want to nap. If you’re ever in Nairobi, this is a must do. This is definitely a top 5 experience. Thank you Agnes and Monica for a great day.

Bonding over local authentic food is a key component to all of my travels. We had an amazing experience with Agnes and her sister Monica, learning to cook authentic Kenyan cuisine. The day was filled with awesome adventures, bargaining at the local farmers market, food prep, lots of laughs & fun and EXCELLENT food! We made coconut ugali, kieneyji vegetables, chapatis, samaki wa kupaka and Kenyan Masala chai tea. Agnes is such a sweet spirit and accommodating host. You’ll love every single minute of this experience. Thanks Agnes and Monica!!!

I had such a great time with Agnes and her sister! She replied really quick to my questions and sent me a complete menu tailored to my dietary preferences. The market tour was very interesting, and although it was crowded, Agnes ensured my safety. After the market, we spent a very enjoyable day making traditional Kenyan dishes from different areas of the country. The food delicious! Agnes and her sister described each dish as we were making it, and explained when and how it might be served. Upon my return home, Agnes followed up with me to provide video recipes for all of the incredible dishes that we made. Please do not hesitate to book this experience. You will not be sorry! Agnes is a professional, and you will learn many new things and have an incredible day!
