Besides majestic temples, Yogyakarta is well-known for its community of handmade artisan. Together with my lovely wife, Fili, we run a bamboo homestay in Bantul and offer an authentic cycling experience visiting these local artisans workshops. Our homestay is located nearby the biggest craft village in Yogyakarta and we'd show you the off the beaten path tracks!
While we pedal our bike through rice paddies and breathing the fresh air, we'll make a stop to visit various artisans workshops who are still keeping the Javanese tradition alive through their devotion to the craft. From woodworking workshop, blankon artisan (Javanese traditional hat), pottery, mosaic, kreneng artisan (one of the dying craft in Yogyakarta with only a handful of elderly woman who is still doing the work), and the list goes on. On the side note, we'll most likely make spontaneous stops at the rice paddies or a local school.
We choose to do this tour by bike as we think cycling is the best way to have the opportunity to interact with the local people.
This cycling tour is open for everyone. If you're not staying at our homestay you are welcome to book this experience in advance and come visit us. Pick up service is available at additional costs.
