DESCRIPTION

Near my village is a very special place named Gunung Padang Megalithic Site. Like a giant's game of pick-up sticks, rectangular stones lay scattered over the terraced hillside. Geologists guess that buried beneath the megalithic jumble is an ancient pyramid. The arrangements of the rocks and stones that are usually found upright have been laid horizontally on beds of gravel. An ancient form of glue sticks some together and below the piles of stones is evidence of rooms, internal steps and terraces, all evidence of massive building, of human intelligence and planning.

The reason I want to take you here is that I think it’s a magical place where you even can find instruments made out of stone and a throne. It is located top of a hill with magnificent views.

We will start our day at 09.00 am by a motorcycle ride for about 2 hours. In case you are with more than 1 person we will take public transportation. Along the way you will see a typical uptown atmosphere. After several kilometers, you will notice a completely different place, a lot of classic houses and rice fields. Continuing our journey you will be amazed by the view, a thick, green forest lay in either side of the main road and soon mountains start to appear as the trip comes to the main destination. We will arrive at the Gunung Padang Megalithic Site at around 11.00 am. I will serve you lunch on the spot. After finishing our lunch I will guide you along the site and show you the unique things that are still captured in this place. We will stay for about 2 hours or longer if you wish and take the same route back.

Hello, my name is Dewa Putu Persada Giri and I am an entrepreneur in briquette distribution. I live in Tanjungsari village in the Cianjur district. I am 23 years old and in my free time I like playing console games and doing voluntary work. I love my region and this is the reason I signed up with I Like Local to show other people this special place.

Location

Gunung padang megalithic site has amazing energy and a fascinating history. Claims of it being one of the oldest pyramid in the world, and the largest megalithic site in SE Asia and possibly the world, make it a must-see. Because its off the tourist trail, the best way to really see it is to see it through the eyes of the locals. I-likelocal.com provides a customized and well planned tour and also give me recommendations to find the right driver to bring me there from jakarta. All in all, it was a magical trip. Thanks for making that happen!

We had a great time with Persada and the Gunung Padang megalithic site is one of a kind. First you will hike up and then you are standing in the middle of this surrealistic place. Persada was a great guide and we can definitely recommend this trip!

This is a hidden gem on Java. Persada is a great guide who told us a lot about life on Java and the site. To reach the place, you have to pass through several small streets and a tea garden with beautiful view. You can only reach the place by foot. There is still dispute on the when and by whom the site was built. The pyramid consists of several layers, mostly hidden from view. The place is a big mystery. Very interesting

The hospitality and generosity shown by Persada throughout this trip was second to none. Anyone considering a trip to Gunung Padang and the surrounding area should absolutely enlist his services as a guide. Firstly, before even arriving in Indonesia I was able to contact Persada regarding travel considerations from Singapore. I had already booked flights (his assessment of the airline I booked with - "always late" - turned out to be accurate, so I would advise asking him about airlines as he has a full time role with a Canadian travel agency) but he was able to help organise picking me up from the airport with his friend who has a car. Bear in mind this is a 3-6 hour trip depending on traffic. He was able to offer a rate cheaper than that being offered by other drivers I had contacted (80£ round trip in the end, a bargain considering the distance and inconvenience to him and his friend). After a pick up from the airport and brief chat I was wiped out so fell asleep on the back seat until arriving in my booking.com homestay in Cianjur close to Gunung Padang. The next day Persada picked me up on his moped. The drive to GP had truly stunning scenery and Persada is an expert at navigating odd tricky spot on the roads (most of the road to GP has recently been rebuilt by the government due to predicted increase in tourism to the area with further excavations being planned). Persada's own knowledge of the area is fantastic. He knows both the local myths and legends of the area, as well as the more recent science and archaeology (he has been on site when the main excavation team led by Danny Hillman were there, and his English ability is excellent so there is no problem with communication). It is hard to put into words the sense of awe when visiting the site. Lunch was no frills with egg/veg noodles and bottled drinks/coffee available at a lone on site vendor, which Persada ordered. After, Persada offered a number of other options including the 'floating village', another 90 minute trip but definitely worth it. With all the time on a moped, be prepared for a sore bum by the end of the trip but it was totally worth it. Persada went above and beyond to spend his weekend and free time sharing his local culture and surrounding with me and it could not have been better (apart from perhaps the torrential rain which came down on the Saturday afternoon, which he had predicted). On the Sunday morning he took me to the local market and then back to the airport. I cannot speak highly enough of Persada. His professionalism, friendliness, local knowledge and ability to navigate Indonesian traffic on a moped were truly excellent and I would recommend his services to anyone who wishes to visit this controversial and fascinating megalithic side. Thank you Persada!
