I will take you to an off-the-beaten track area of India – the Great Rann of Kutch – the largest seasonal salt desert in the world famous for its white salty sand. It is located in the most western district of Gujarat, India. It used to be connected to the Indus River with the Arabian Sea, but since the 1819 earthquake it has turned into a seasonal salt desert.

I will pick you up in Bhuj (airport/train or bus station) and will brief you about the upcoming two days. We will start our adventure with a drive through the Banni region, where you'll see flat desert and buffalo herds. We will drive to the top of the Kalo Dungar Hill, the highest hill of Kutch (462m), probably the only place where you can overlook the Great Rann of Kutch. From here we will start a trek of 5 km. The desert and sky often become indistinguishable which makes you feel like you are at the edge of the earth. We will have lunch at Khavda village. In the afternoon we will visit a few traditional villages where you can see different styles of embroidery. At the end of the day you can enjoy the sunset and have dinner with a local family near Dhordo village.

The next day we will slowly drive back to Bhuj after a cup of tea. On our way back we will drive through the flat desert and have the chance to see some cattle herders. We will have lunch with a local family in Bhuj. In the afternoon we are going for a hike around the hills of Bhuj. You will then have dinner and overnight stay in Bhuj with a Iocal family.

Meet Kuldip

Member since: August 2014

Namaste, my name is Kuldip Gadhvi. I am born and raised in Bhuj, in the state of Gujarat, west India. I became interested in Kutch when I was working as a project coordinator in the Shroff Foundation Trust and worked in close contact with the local communities. Kutch has many different cultures and communities, and over the years I have learned about their customs, traditions, faith and beliefs and most interesting of all - their harmonious existence with their cattle. I became very passionate about sharing my love and knowledge of Kutch and as a result I started hosting and guiding travelers. If you fancy visiting off-the-beaten-track places, meeting local people and love being in the middle of nowhere, then Kutch is the perfect place for you... Be welcome into my world and ‘let’s get lost’ :-)
