You can hardly believe it, but the busiest of all places, Old Delhi, is somewhat serene in the mornings. This breakfast walk will take you back to the black and white era. The beauty of an early morning walk relies upon the fresh dishes available only in the mornings. They include for example Paneer Pakoda (cubes of cottage cheese immersed in a flour batter, and deep fried), Bedmi Pooris (a puffy, hefty, deep-fried puri-like bread made of wheat flour, spices, and dal which is served with a spicy aloo sabzi, or potato curry), Pitthi and Matar kachori (a proper Delhi preparation, with peas/dal stuffing, spiced up with condiments is another deep fried dish, served hot with a potato gravy) and Nahari (is a traditional dish made with goat’s meat and with hot spices).
Besides warm dishes in the mornings it is also a time of sweets usually made of milk and milk solids, sugar and sometimes with other ingredients like dal/peas or dry fruits. You will enjoy Nagori Halwa, a small, crispy, crumbly puri, Moong dal halwa, often prepared in winters, to keep the body warm and Kheer which is a rice pudding made of milk and sugar. These are only a few examples of the rich Delhi food culture.
