Would you like to unleash your creative side and get busy with paint and textiles? Then this Tanji batik workshop is the perfect setting for any level of artist: from absolute beginner to advanced. Batik is a technique of dyeing applied to a whole cloth. These cloths are often used to make clothing which you will see many Gambians wearing, but is also used for interior design and is characteristic of Tanji art. The workshop is provided by a local employee that is very experienced with the traditional Tanji batik technique. Geneba or one of the others will teach you all the ins and outs of batik painting. In order to be able to batik the textile needs to be treated with a specific wax first. As soon as the wax has dried the textile can be painted. Sometimes this takes the form of dipping the entire cloth into a bath of mixed dye. The parts that have wax do not absorb any paint. In this way you can create beautiful patterns which are different each time due to the handmade process. You will take home your own piece of Gambia artwork.

Meet Franco, Alhagie Saho

Member since: February 2016

Hello, we are Franco, Alhagie Saho. We are born in Jakaba in Gambia’s countryside. At a very young age we started looking for a better future for our family and ourselves. We have worked in a guesthouse for some time where we have met many people from around the world. This has taught us a lot. Ten years ago we got in contact with a couple of people from the Netherlands. With them we have set-up several projects with the goal to give children a chance to build a future. Franco speaks English and Dutch and Alhagie speaks English. We would love to show you our Gambian way of life and to learn from each other. We are looking forward to welcome you!
