Trekking in nong plai and nong ndreng forest

Dakdak dam village (saen monourom), Cambodia

The Activity

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Trekking between hilly savanna and evergreen forests
  • Learn how to survive in the forest and collect its typical food for dinner
  • Duration: 1 day
  • Maximum number of participants is 6

During this hike you will get to know everything about our forest and how we use it. We will teach you about the medicinal plants and their uses, the food you can eat and off course you will enjoy the magnificent landscape with its waterfalls and rivers.

DESCRIPTION

During this trekking in between the hilly savanna and evergreen forests, you will get to know about our way of life in the forest. Vanna, Pert or Kree will collect forest foods (such as ferns, palms or rattan) with you and will show you how they are prepared. The different medicinal plants and their uses will also be explained. Materials that we collect for our everyday life (bamboo, rattan, grass to make house roofing) will also be discussed along the walk. You will enjoy lunch (cooked with the vegetables you collected) with the guide in the forest.

During the trek through our community forest, you will discover hidden waterfalls and cool clear rivers where you can bathe and swim safely. You will also learn about old stories and myths that explain our landscapes.

Note that activities are depending on the season. The best season for doing the trekking in the forest is during the dry season from November to April.

Meet the Dak Dam community

Ask a question

We are Bunong people living in Dak Dam village. After great help from different organizations, we are now able to receive you and make you a part of our community! You will join us in our daily activities and we will show you how we live. We would like to provide you with an authentic experience of local people in Cambodia. One of our actual concerns is that deforestation is undermining our livelihoods as forest is important for us as you will discover. We have three community forestry areas in Dak dam which are managed by ourselves. Your visit to our community will also contribute to protecting those forest areas allowing us to regularly patrol and prevent illegal activities. Indeed, 30 % of the cost of each tour is going directly to a community box which is used by villagers for community forest preservation. Our pictures are made by Lisa Arensen.
