During this adventurous trek you will visit small local villages, engage with indigenous communities, learn about local farming, fishing and hunting techniques. You will stay overnight in the jungle and have the possibility to meet 'The Giants of the Virachey Forest'. You will follow off the beaten track trails leading through primary and secondary forest where numerous small creeks and streams meander. This trek has a high expedition experience!
We will start our journey at 8.30 in the morning by car in the direction of Voensai. A small local boat will bring us to Tra village where we have to register ourselves registered at the village Chief's house. We continue a little further north by boat where we will start our trek through a variety of landscapes. In the beginning forest alternates with rice paddy fields. After a few hours of trekking we will enjoy lunch at a local farmhouse prepared by the local village people. As soon as we start walking again you will notice that the forest get denser. This is where the primary forest starts, the oldest part of the jungle with trees that can become a couple of hundreds years old. At the end of the day we reach our campsite for the night. You can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and refresh yourself in the nearby stream. Dinner will be served at the campfire and your first night in your hammock will be a reality.
The next morning we will rise early. This will be a day that is mainly off the beaten track. You can expect dense vegetation were a path is often cut with a machete. A real jungle experience awaits you! Around noon we will get to a nice spot where we will enjoy our lunch and you even can take a refreshing swim if the small river has enough water. In the afternoon we continue our journey through the tropical forest of the Virachey National Park. As we arrive at our campsite you can cool off in the refreshing water of the small river. After having enjoyed our dinner we are going on a night hike! Armed with a flashlight, we take a small hike around the campsite. On quite some occasions we have spotted some Lorys Pigmy's (a very small primate) and some Civets (small jungle cats). We saw some deer as well.
An early rise is required as we are going for an interesting trek today through a majestically part of the Prei Tanop forest. During the wet season there are many small streams and creeks meandering through this area. It provides beautiful spots to have a break and enjoy our lunch. After lunch we head back south and in the afternoon we arrive at a small farmhouse of a local family where we spend the night. You can help them in preparing the dinner and learn about their way of living and culture. If you are lucky you can even try their traditionally made rice wine for around 10.000 Riel ($2.50) a jar. Enjoy it while sitting at a campfire.
The next morning the family has prepared our breakfast and around 8.30 we will say goodbye. We will walk back to Tra Village where we will take the boat back to Voensai. We will arrive in Banlung around 4pm.
