During this adventurous trek you will visit small local villages, engage with indigenous communities, learn about local farming, fishing and hunting techniques. You will stay overnight in the jungle and have the possibility to meet 'The Giants of the Virachey Forest'. You will follow “off the beaten track” trails leading through primary and secondary forest where numerous small creeks and streams meander. This trek offers and exciting expedition experience!

We will start our journey at 8:30 in the morning by car in the direction of Voensai. There we will take a small local boat that brings us to Tra Village, a journey that lasts around 40 minutes. You will enjoy the lush jungle on the shores of the river and the sounds of the early morning. After registering at the village Chief's house and continuing a little further north by boat, we start our walking journey through a variety of landscapes. There patches of forests alternate with rice paddy fields. Around noon we will have lunch at a small farmhouse after which we head up north where the forest gets denser. Soon we enter the primary forest. During the trek we take regular breaks to enjoy the surroundings and to rest a little bit. We will arrive at the campsite around 4 pm. We will enjoy some coffee or tea and refresh in a nearby stream. The hammocks will be tied and the campsite prepared for the night. You can enjoy a nice dinner at the campfire.

The second day of the excursion we will awaken early in order to have a full day of hiking and adventure. After we have had breakfast we will prepare for a day of mainly “off the beaten track”. You can expect dense vegetation were a path is often cleared with a machete. You will encounter many of the 'Giant Trees of the Virachey Forest'. Around noon we will rest at a nice spot for a one-hour break to enjoy our lunch. If the small river has enough water, you can enjoy a refreshing swim. After our lunch we continue our journey where again wonderful nature surrounds you. At some point you might even see the evidence of an Asian black bear that tried to get some insects out of a big tree. As we arrive at our campsite you can cool off in the refreshing water of the small river. We will prepare for the night and enjoy dinner cooked on a wood fire. After some rest we are going on a night hike! Armed with a flashlight, we take a small hike around the campsite. On many occasions we have spotted some Lorys Pigmy's (a very small primate) and some Civets (small jungle cats). You can find them in all layers of the canopy of the trees. We have also seen some deer as well.

The final morning of our excursion we will enjoy our last day of hiking. After a couple of hours the forest becomes less dense and you will start seeing the first farmhouses. Just before noon you get back to Tra Village where we will take the boat back to Voensai. We will arrive in Banlung around 4pm.

Meet The Team

Member since: September 2014

We are a team of five and we will take you on an expedition you won't forget. The indigenous peoples of the northeast are the most marginalised in the country, often dealing with abject poverty and deficiencies in education and health care. We offer local indigenous people training to become responsible tour guides, in addition to hiring indigenous trackers for our treks. In this way we hope to protect the forest and improve the lives of the local people in this part of Cambodia.
